How to scale up your roastery?

Growth is an exciting stage for every coffee roastery. More orders, more recognition, and more customers who love your coffee. But growth also brings new challenges. At a certain point, many roasters realize that the roasting setup that worked perfectly in the beginning may start to limit production. Batch sizes become too small, roasting schedules get tighter, and maintaining consistent quality becomes more complex.

Scaling your roastery successfully requires more than simply roasting more coffee. It requires smart decisions about capacity, workflow, and process control. In this article, we’ll explore the key questions roasters face when scaling up, and how the right roasting solutions can support your next stage of growth.

Increase capacity, keep the quality

One of the first signs that your roastery is ready to scale is when demand begins to exceed your current production capacity. Many roasters initially try to solve this by roasting more batches per day. While this works for a while, it often leads to longer workdays, more team capacity, and limited room for further growth.

Scaling capacity effectively usually involves:

  • Increasing batch size
  • Roasting more batches per day
  • Introduce more roasting days

At some point, however, you will reach the limits of your roaster's capacity and will no longer be able to grow. Would you like tips on replacing your roaster, advice on the size of your new roaster, or more information about trading in your old roaster? Please contact us.

Making your workflow more efficient

As your production volume increases, the roasting machine becomes part of a larger workflow. Efficient roasteries focus not only on roasting but also on reducing downtime between batches and streamlining their production process. A well-designed roasting setup allows operators to move smoothly from one batch to the next.

For example, you could consider adding a coffee conveyor, which helps you quickly weigh coffee and efficiently transport the green coffee to the hopper of your roaster. An external cyclone can also help improve your workflow by eliminating the need to stop roasting to remove chaff.

Would you like to automate the entire process from loading coffee to destoning? Then choose a Giesen 6 or 15 machine with the automatic package. This package includes machine automation of the hopper, roaster valve, and cooling sieve.
